Vice President Andrew Johnson became our President

after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865.

Assassination plans had been made against Johnson as well,

but his would-be assassin decided to not carry through with the plans.

He instead headed to a local bar.

Presidential Term: 1865-1869

Political Party: Democratic

Vice President: None

Johnson's main issue was how to readmit the Southern states and how to respond to those who rebelled. Andrew Johnson wanted to be more lenient with the Southerns than the legislative branch desired. He was a strong supporter of states rights, and still believed that states should decide on the suffrage of former slaves.

In an effort to ensure that Republicans would remain in power, the Radical Republicans of congress sought to enfranchise all black people, who would most likely vote for Republicans. They succeeded, even overturning Johnson's vetoes, through their passage of the 14th Amendment.

After Congress overturned Johnson's veto of the Tenure of Office Act in 1867, Andrew Johnson reacted by attempting to fire the Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. In response, in 1868 Congress tried to impeach him for "high crimes and misdemeanors." The impeachment trial lasted from March through May. The House of Representatives voted to impeach him but the Senate was short one vote of the two-thirds majority required to impeach him.
